Ingredients
Scale
1 lb ground beef
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
1/4 cup ketchup
1 tbsp brown sugar
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp yellow mustard
1/2 tsp garlic powder
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
6–8 hamburger buns, split and toasted (optional)
Instructions
In a large skillet, cook ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain any excess grease.
Add chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet with the cooked beef. Cook until vegetables are softened, about 5-7 minutes.
Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, and garlic powder.
Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken slightly.
Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
Serve hot on toasted hamburger buns.
Notes
For a spicier Sloppy Joe, add a pinch of red pepper flakes with the other seasonings.
You can substitute ground turkey or ground chicken for the ground beef.
If you prefer a thicker sauce, you can simmer for a few extra minutes or mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water and stir it into the simmering sauce.
