This Sloppy Joe Tater Tot Casserole is a comforting and easy-to-make dish featuring seasoned ground beef in a savory sloppy joe sauce, topped with shredded cheddar cheese and crispy tater tots.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 recommended)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 (15 ounce) can sloppy joe sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, plus more for topping
  • 1 (32 ounce) bag frozen tater tots
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain any excess grease.
  3. Add chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet with the beef. Cook, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Stir in the sloppy joe sauce and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes, allowing flavors to meld. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Pour the sloppy joe mixture into a 9×13 inch baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  6. Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the sloppy joe mixture.
  7. Arrange frozen tater tots in a single layer over the cheese.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until tater tots are golden brown and crispy.
  9. If desired, sprinkle a little more cheese over the top during the last 5 minutes of baking.
  10. Let stand for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • 80/20 ground beef is recommended for best flavor.
  • Adjust salt and pepper to your preference.
  • For extra crispiness, you can broil the tater tots for the last few minutes, watching carefully to prevent burning.
  • This casserole is great for a weeknight family dinner.
