A healthier take on a classic dessert, this apple crisp features a tender, spiced apple filling topped with a crunchy, wholesome oat and whole wheat crumble.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples (Granny Smith, Fuji, or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup or honey
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup rolled oats (not instant)
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar (or less, to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted (or coconut oil)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, lemon juice, maple syrup (or honey), 1 tsp cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss to coat evenly. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, combine rolled oats, whole wheat flour, brown sugar, and 1/2 tsp cinnamon. Pour melted butter (or coconut oil) over the oat mixture and mix with a fork until crumbly.
  4. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple filling.
  5. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown and crisp.
  6. Let cool slightly before serving. Delicious warm with a scoop of vanilla frozen yogurt or a dollop of Greek yogurt.
