A delicious and comforting gluten-free apple crisp featuring a sweet, spiced apple filling topped with a crispy, buttery oat crumble. Perfect for a warm dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 68 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (adjust to apple sweetness)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup gluten-free all-purpose flour blend (ensure it contains xanthan gum or add 1/4 tsp)
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup certified gluten-free rolled oats
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 inch or 9×9 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, lemon juice, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss gently to coat the fruit. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, combine the gluten-free flour blend, brown sugar, certified gluten-free rolled oats, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and salt for the topping.
  4. Add the cold butter pieces to the dry ingredients. Using your fingertips or a pastry blender, cut the butter into the mixture until coarse crumbs form.
  5. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple filling in the baking dish.
  6. Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the apples are tender and bubbly, and the topping is golden brown and crispy. If the topping browns too quickly, you can lightly tent it with aluminum foil.
  7. Let the crisp cool for at least 15-20 minutes before serving. It’s delicious warm, plain or with gluten-free vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • Adjust the amount of granulated sugar based on the sweetness of your apples.
  • If your gluten-free flour blend does not contain xanthan gum, add 1/4 teaspoon to the flour mixture.
  • For extra crispiness, you can toast the oats lightly before adding them to the topping mixture.
  • Serve warm with a scoop of gluten-free vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
