A classic and comforting apple crisp recipe featuring a tender apple filling and a perfectly crisp oat topping. Easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Filling:
  • 6 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • For the Topping:
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 inch or 9-inch round baking dish.
  2. Prepare the filling: In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1 tbsp flour, 1 tsp cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss until apples are evenly coated. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  3. Prepare the topping: In a separate medium bowl, combine the rolled oats, 1/2 cup flour, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, and salt. Whisk to combine.
  4. Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry topping ingredients. Using your fingers or a pastry blender, cut the butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces remaining.
  5. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple filling in the baking dish.
  6. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the apple filling is bubbly and tender, and the topping is golden brown and crispy. If the topping browns too quickly, you can loosely tent it with foil.
  7. Remove from oven and let cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving.
  8. Serve warm, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Notes

  • For a richer topping, you can add 1/4 cup chopped nuts (like pecans or walnuts) to the oat mixture.
  • If your apples are very tart, you may want to increase the sugar in the filling slightly.
  • Ensure the butter is cold when making the topping for the best crumbly texture.
